The book was an instant success and became an international best seller. The end approached, inexorable, at the same measured pace. Oh, was it possible to read more slowly? - No. You were not quite at the end of the story, at that terrible flyleaf, blank like a shuttered window: there were still a few pages under your thumb, still to be sought and treasured. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You throw in an organ grinder and some insolent chickens and you've got the making of a great short story. It’s quite a big leap, and didn’t convince me totally. Unfortunately some of the things she does when she starts to take action are not very believable, like joining an activist group and having an affair with its organiser. This is consistent with the character, but doesn’t make for a great story until much later in the book where she starts to take action. Part of the difficulty of the book lies in the fact that for much of it, Nazneen is so accepting of her fate. Answers for monica, author of brick lane (3) crossword clue, 3 letters.
